Exploring the challenges of providing quality midwifery care in a complex environment
Opening Session - Thursday, 6 September 2018, 9:00

Sue trained as a midwife in NZ in 1976 and has spent most of her career working in rural areas including Papua New Guinea, a camp for refugees in Malaysia, a small rural hospital in NZ and , since 1990, as a community midwife in NZ providing autonomous midwifery care for women from early in pregnancy through to six weeks postpartum. Sue is incredibly proud of the NZ maternity service which enables women to experience continuity of care by their own midwife throughout their childbirth experience and believes this is enriching not only for women but midwives as well. The relationships with women and their families at the life-changing time of all aspects of childbirth is what has sustained her throughout her career.

Sue has served as president of the NZ College of Midwives and was appointed as a member of the Midwifery Council of NZ. She is a past board member of ICM and is currently co-chair of the ICM Regulation Standing Committee.

Sue now works as the Maternity Quality & Safety Programme Coordinator for the Northland District Health Board. In this role she has the opportunity to explore quality issues in a multidisciplinary environment and in a context of a variety of social, economic and cultural influences as represented in the local population. Quality care can mean different things to different people and midwives are required to incorporate the challenges of this as they work in partnership with women. Sue will explore these in her presentation.

Franka Cadée

Keynote Session - Saturday, 8 September 2018, 9:00

Through the years I have developed myself as a competent enthusiastic midwife/advisor on international maternal health, women’s issues and twinning in healthcare. With my anthropological and midwifery background plus personal experience of growing up and/or working in Pakistan and Sudan, UK, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Morocco and the Netherlands, I am well aware of the scope, cultural context and realities of the field. Projects that I have initiated, developed, managed and evaluated have involved a broad spectrum of skills from initiating innovative methods of cooperation, fundraising and financial management and evaluation research to managing large groups of (women) volunteers. My strongest quality is to be well informed, think strategically and involve, motivate and enthuse others with a mixture of lateral thinking, hard work and realism
